EPR: Extended Producer Responsibility.
Under EPR, those who manufacture and discharge plastic waste into the market along with those who use plastic products for packaging have the responsibility for recovering, recycling, reusing, and disposing of the product appropriately.
EPR refers to a product’s complete lifecycle and holds the manufacturer or brand accountable for the effective and environment-friendly management of the products they manufacture. It commences when the product is conceptualised and produced and ends when the consumer has used the product entirely.
EPR Guidelines
The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change announced new EPR guidelines under the Plastic Waste Management Criteria, with the purpose of reducing plastic generation and defining rigorous rules to ensure safe plastic waste management.
Manufacturers are considered accountable for the collection and recycling of defined volumes of plastic that they create and sell on the market under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The PWMR holds plastic manufacturers and importers, as well as brand owners that use plastic for packaging, accountable for waste management. According to the rules, manufacturers have five years to meet waste management targets, beginning with 50% by 2024-25 and 80% from 2027-28 onwards
